Ingredients

For the Sauce

  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp sweet soy sauce (kecap manis style)
  • 1–2 tsp sambal oelek (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp honey or brown sugar
  • 1–2 tbsp water (to loosen)

For the Bowl

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 zucchini, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1–2 tbsp oil
  • Salt, to taste

For Serving

  • Cooked jasmine rice
  • Fresh cucumber, sliced
  • Green onions, sliced
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

1. Make the Sauce

In a small bowl, whisk together oyster sauce, sweet soy sauce, sambal, hoisin, rice vinegar, honey, and water. Set aside.

2. Prep the Ingredients

Chop all vegetables and set aside. Mince garlic and ginger and keep them separate so they’re ready to go.

3. Cook the Vegetables

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil. Add zucchini, bell pepper, and celery. Sauté until lightly browned but still crisp. Do not overcook. Remove from the pan and set aside.

4. Cook the Beef

Add a little more oil to the pan if needed. Add diced onion and cook until slightly softened. Push to the side of the pan.

Add ground beef and let it cook undisturbed for 2–3 minutes to develop browning. Break it up and continue cooking until fully cooked.

5. Add Aromatics

Add garlic and ginger to the pan and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.

Drain off excess fat.

6. Combine Everything

Add the cooked vegetables back into the pan. Pour in the sauce and toss everything together until evenly coated and glossy.

7. Serve

Spoon over warm jasmine rice. Top with fresh cucumber, green onions, and sesame seeds.

Tips for the Best Beef Bowls

  • Let the beef sit undisturbed before breaking it up for better browning
  • Don’t overcook the vegetables—they should still have some bite
  • Add cucumber fresh at the end for contrast and crunch
  • Finish with an extra drizzle of sauce for that glossy look

FAQs

Can I make this with ground pork or chicken?

Yes! Ground pork or chicken works great—it will have a slightly different flavor profile.

Is this spicy?

It has a mild heat from the sambal, but you can easily adjust it to your preference.

Can I meal prep this?

Yes. Store the beef and rice separately from the fresh toppings for best texture.

What other veggies can I use?

Honestly whatever you have on hand. Broccoli, snap peas, mushrooms, or carrots (added fresh) all work well.
